Have you ever replaced your door hardware only to discover that the new strike plate causes your door to not latch? Have you ever had a door that would not close or latch for whatever reason? So, today I’m going to show you how to easily fix a door that won’t close.
Here are a few different ideas to fix a door that sticks or won’t latch:
If your door is sticking, it’s probably because the hinges are out of alignment. Simply remove the screws from the hinge plates and adjust them until the door closes properly. Then replace the screws.
The strike plate is the metal plate on the door frame that the latch bolt fits into. If the hole in the strike plate is too big, the latch bolt will not catch and the door will not close. To fix this, simply file down the striker plate until it’s a tight fit.
If there are gaps around the door, this can also cause the door to not close properly. To fix this, simply add weatherstripping around the door.
A door sweep is a strip of metal or plastic that fits on the bottom of the door. This will help to seal any gaps and keep out drafts.
A door stop is a small piece of wood or plastic that fits on the door frame. This will help to keep the door from swinging open too far and hitting the wall.
I hope these tips help you fix your door that won’t close! If you have any other tips, please share them in the comments below.
